Goober with a Doumbek

about

A new original piece. There are people in the SCA who don't care for bardic circles. Some of us don't generally care for drum circles or middle eastern dance. I am one of the latter. Not saying I'm right. Just not my thing.

The song was inspired by a conversation with Master Olivier de Bayonne, and is dedicated to him.

lyrics

I was walking through the camp on a beautiful night
Looking for a place where they treat the bards right.
Like Marinus, Eoforwic or Thanet House
Like Pink Fuzzy Bunny or the Howling Mouse

When I heard the drums beatin’ from across the lake
And I thought to myself “ah for Odin’s sake”
I like all kinds a music, ain’t no period cop.
But will these tribal monkey pot-heads never stop?

It was a goober with a doumbek doumbek doumbek
Goober with a doumbek dum-tek-a-tek
A goober with a doumbek doumbek doumbek
Goober with a doumbek dum-tek-a-tek

So I went off in search of this terrible noise
And I found this camp full of scrawny shirtless boys
hoping that their rhythm would drum up some dancers
but more beledi bunglers is all that would answer

They were terrible, miserable, and way off beat.
They were chasin’ away ev’ry girl on the street.
I sat and I cried, and I covered my ears.
I’d fin’ lly realized my worst doumbek fears

Chorus

Well I finally had enough, so a grabbed a drum
I sat in their circle and I showed ‘em some
I played Guwazi and the Masmoodi
Soufi, Serto, and the Chiftatelli

By the time I was done the camp was totally forsooth
The ladies were dancing, so I said to these goofs
“Ya See that boyz? Ya see, that’s how it’s done
‘Cause I’m a Master Bard. I’m always bringin’ da FUN!

I’m not a goober with a doumbek doumbek doumbek
Goober with a doumbek dum-tek-a-tek
A goober with a doumbek doumbek doumbek
Goober with a doumbek dum-tek-a-tek

Das right sirrah.
Efenwealt Wystle in da camp.
You knaves can’t even count to four.
I’ll show you da doubmek! I been on da crusades!!
