Edi Beo

about

A middle English song about the Virgin Mary. I'm not religious but I've always liked this sweet tune. I have know idea where the lyric translation came from. My father-in-law Dr. Karl Wienand might have done it or maybe lifted out of an old book somewhere. This is only the first verse of a much longer song. Thanks to Dr. Kevin Brock for pointers on pronunciation. I think I got it right, or at least consistent.

lyrics

Edi beo thu heavene quene
Folkes froure and engles bliss
Moder unwemmed and maiden clene
Swich in world non other nis
On thee hit is wel eth sene
Of alle wimmen thu havest the pris
Mi swete levedi her mi bene
And rue of mi zif thi wil is

Happy be thou heavenly queen
Mankind's comfort and angels' bliss
Mother untainted and maiden clean
Such in world, none other is
Of thee easily it is seen
That of all women thou hast the prize
My sweet lady hear my boon
And rue of me of thy will is.
