about

This song came about because Kirsten saw a facebook post. It was by someone who had taken the notes that Hieronymus Bosch painted on someone's naked buttocks in a scene of Hell, in his triptych “The Garden of Earthly Delights.” They transcribed and arranged the music into different instruments. It was a really strange tune, even by Medieval standards. He might have just put the notes on the page in an artistically appealing manner, or it may have been done consciously, we will never know. So I took that tune and played with it a bit. We added a bridge that has nothing to do with the original music, but the verse and chorus use it. We repeated and adjusted a bit to work with the phrasing. I got the idea for the words from looking at the painting for quite a while. The theme is the Garden of Eden, with people enjoying themselves frolicking and making merry. The sinister side (left , right if you are facing it) is a depiction of hell, with devils and naked butt music and instruments! In the middle ages, those instruments (harp, lute, hurdy gurdy, schawm etc.) were the devil’s instruments because they weren’t allowed to be played in the church.
One verse has to do with the frolicking and riding of animals and lounging under trees naked, from the center of the painting. The chorus is about why be a saint, when sinners have more fun and get to play the harp and the lute! And it ends up talking about my wish that no matter how you choose to live your life, that others would support you instead of demonize you or your choices.

lyrics

When God created Adam then he made the luscious Eve
And he Placed them in a garden full of pure depravity….
They frolicked in the verdant verge with true unfettered glee,
raced-naked upon bear and bull and languished in the sea
The sea

Chorus
Why choose saint, when sinners sing and dance and play the harp and lute
Proclaim the passions and the pleasures of forbidden fruit

The multitude of masses in insousciant revelry
They Gambol in the grasses, making merry, wild and free...
With-delights of earthly pleasures and with no apology
They celebrate unfettered by the shame you place on me
On me

Chorus

Instrumental

Bridge:
The music of the sinners I do scribe with joyful cheer
upon the rounded buttocks of-a debauching reveler.
with Ink and flesh I share this tune and dance beneath a swollen moon
with-those full-of love and laughter ...whom... I do... hold dear...

Place not thy prudish values on the life I choose to lead
I will savour luscious fruit and lounge uncloth-ed neath the trees...
I live my life as I wish, it is what my spirit needs
Let others do Just as they will, I swear this is my creed
My creed

Why choose saint when sinners sing and dance and play the harp and lute
Proclaim the passions and the pleasures of forbidden fruit
